Richard Wilson "Dick" Spence, Sr., age 84, of Elkton, MD, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014. Born in Childs, MD, on August 17, 1929, he was the son of the late James H. "Pete" and Ethel Cameron Spence.
Mr. Spence retired as a supervisor from the Chrysler Corporation, Newark, DE, after more than 30 years of service. Following his retirement, he worked for Montgomery Brothers, Rising Sun. Mr. Spence was a very active member of Baptist Bible Church, now Crossroads Bible Church, where he served in many roles for over 50 years. He was also a member of UAW Local #1183, Newark. Mr. Spence was an avid sports fan and had been a coach for Elkton Little League. He enjoyed working, detailing cars, and going to the beach.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Paula Case Spence; children, Richard W. Spence, Jr., Algadones, NM, Debbi Smith, Washington, DC, and Mary Elizabeth Spence, Elkton, MD; grandchildren, Richard W. Spence, III, and Alisha Foley; great-grandchildren, Hannah and James Foley; and sisters, Betty Ann Deibert, North East, MD, Jean S. Mahoney, Elkton, MD, and Florence M. Raimato, Kennett Square, PA.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Spence was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Juergens Spence; great-grandson, Michael Spence; and siblings, James H. Spence, Jr., William H. Spence, Marie Spence, Alwilda Malin, Dorothy Jackson, and Marjorie Bocora.
Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton St., Elkton, MD 21921. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m., Monday, June 30. Interment will follow the service in Gilpin Manor Memorial Park, Elkton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Seasons Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
