Harry E. Delawder, Sr.
Harry Edward Delawder, Sr., age 66, of Elkton, MD, passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2016. Born in Scranton, PA, on April 30, 1950, he was the son of the late Harry and Gloria Keiper Delawder.
Mr. Delawder was a graduate of Avon Grove High School, West Grove, PA, where he met his future wife, Darlene. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and soon after was deployed to Viet Nam. Following his military service, he was employed by P.E. Kramme of Avondale, PA. He and his wife, Darlene, moved to Elkton where he worked for Pirelli Cable Company, Terumo and Majestic. Mr. Delawder then went to work for the Christina School District in Newark, DE, where he dearly loved working with the children and teachers. Following retirement, he became involved with veterans, assisting with telephone calls and paperwork to ensure they received their medical benefits. His memberships included VFW Post #8175 and American Legion Cecil Post #15, both in Elkton. Along with his friend, Ray Russo, they traveled to various schools in Cecil County, educating the students about different wars and the dangers our military personnel are exposed to throughout their time of service to our country. His other interests included antique automobiles and classic car shows, as well as political history.
Mr. Delawder was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved being with people and helping others in any way needed.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Darlene Shartzer Delawder; sons, Harry E. Delawder, Jr. and wife, Dana, and their children, Megan Eileen and Daniel Steven; and Steven James Delawder and his fiancée, Carolyn Allen, and her son, Michael Rogers; and siblings, Leona Stugus, Frank Kovach and Trudy Delawder.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Monday, November 28, 2016, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Funeral service with military honors will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at the funeral home, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Private interment will be in Union Hill Cemetery, Kennett Square, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Perry Point VA Hospital, in care of the funeral home at the above address.
