Esther Bowser, age 99, of Elkton, MD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 2, 2017. Born in Chatham, IL, she was the daughter of the late John B. and Barbara Fahs Werner.
The daughter of farmers, Esther grew up in Astoria, IL, and graduated from Astoria High School. She met her husband of 47 years, Childs, in Astoria and lived there for several years before moving to New Jersey. Childs and Esther also lived in Kentucky, Maryland and Pennsylvania prior to settling in Elkton to be near their daughter, Barbara.
Esther worked as a nurse's aide at several hospitals and as a cafeteria manager at North Pocono School, where she retired after 11 years of service. Esther was a member of the Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, Newark, DE.
In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Childs Bowser; son, David Bowser; great-grandson, Bryan Johnston; and 4 sisters and 1 brother.
Esther is survived by daughters, Barbara Johnston and Suzanne Skrypek; son, John Henry Bowser; 7 grandchildren, Christian Johnston, Douglas Johnston, Amy Spencer, Sarah Lammers, Andrew Bowser, Shannon Luten and Rebekah Burns; 11 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 8, 2017 at Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, 1100 W. Church Road, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Head of Christiana Presbyterian Cemetery.
