Obituary

Terralyn Louise Square, age 87, of Elkton, MD, passed away Thursday, October 21, 2021. Born in Utica, NY, on January 30, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Louise Blake Duross and Robert E. Nugent.

Mrs. Square attended Kemble St. Grade School and high school at Utica Free Academy. She landed her first job at Maynard's Diner in downtown Utica, and later at Manny's on the Parkway.

The second portion of her life was spent in Rome, NY, where she owned the Capital Restaurant before the urban renewal projects. Later she went on to work at Griffiss Air Force Base before retiring from Turning Stone Casino.

Mrs. Square had an exuberant and energetic personality who embraced all that her life had to offer. Although she lived most of her life in the Utica-Rome area in New York, she spent the last 15 years with her daughters in Maryland. She loved traveling, especially on her annual birthday celebration with her family, being a part of a small investment group comprised of cousins, and spending winters in Florida with her sister. She always looked forward to a regular Friday night dinner out with close friends and family.

Being such a people person, she grew restless in retirement and volunteered for a number of years at the Rome Senior Center.

Survivors include her two daughters, Debbie Jeffers (Paul Hyde) and Jean Pennington (Max); sister, Nancy Williams (Walter); 5 grandchildren, Erin Hook (Bart), Gwyn Sheldon (Charles), Mike, Robert (Anita), and Ben (Nicole) Metcalfe; and 7 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and the Duross and Maher cousins.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Square was preceded in death by her first husband, Emory C. Jones, son of Gladys K. Duesler, Utica, NY, and Robert H. Jones, Whitesboro, NY, and second husband, Frank "Shorty" Square, Tarrytown, NY.

The extended family would like to acknowledge the loving care provided by her daughter, Jean, in her final years, and also Amedisys Hospice Care of Elkton for their gentle, supportive care which lightened the process of her passing in the final week.

The family will have a private service with interment at Waterville Cemetery, Waterville NY, on the weekend of June 19 th , 2022.
