Russell William
Hamilton, Sr.
March 8, 1940 – December 8, 2024
Russell William Hamilton Sr., 84, of Elkton, MD, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024. Born in Upper Darby, PA, on March 8, 1940, he was the son of the late Russell C. and Hester Glovier Hamilton.
Russell had a distinguished career that spanned more than 40 years in two fields he loved deeply. He served as a dedicated police officer for Delaware County for over two decades before retiring. Following his time in law enforcement, Russell pursued his passion for photography, capturing the thrills and excitement of NASCAR for another 20+ years. Though Russell's professional life was marked by great accomplishments, it was his personal life that truly defined him. His greatest love was for his wife, Johanne, affectionately called "Miss Ham." Her passing was a deep sorrow from which he never fully recovered, but their enduring love remained a guiding force in his life. Russell's family and their pets meant everything to him. He adored his daughter's Shih Tzu, Walter, and was lovingly cared for by "grand cat", Rex, his son's cat. An avid fan of fast cars with big engines, he found joy in motorsports and was thrilled by the energy of NASCAR. He was also known for his love of homemade chocolate chip cookies (Alli), gardening, and his enthusiastic support of the local Cecil County Arts Council. His passion for animals, photography, and World War II artifacts further reflected his diverse interests. In addition to his career and hobbies, Russell was a deeply caring and generous man. His love for his family and friends, and his belief in the importance of community, will be remembered by all who knew him.
Survivors include his children, Annmarie Hamilton, Elkton, MD, and Russell Hamilton Jr. (Allison), Earleville, MD; grandchildren, Derik Hamilton, Newark, DE, and Emily Hamilton, Erie, PA; and brother, Bruce Hamilton, Santa Monica, CA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Johanne Fore Hamilton.
Celebration of Life will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, December 21, 2024, at the Cecil County Arts Council, 135 E. Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Interment will be private.
