Roberta "Bertie" Ellen McKinney, age 82, of North East, MD (formerly of Newark, DE), passed away Thursday, January 22, 2026. Born in Columbus, OH, on March 27, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Susan Schwalbauch.

Mrs. McKinney retired after more than 30 years as a team leader with W.L. Gore & Associates, where she was known for her strong work ethic and commitment to others. She enjoyed crocheting, working on puzzles, and spending cherished time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. McKinney also had a love for travel and enjoyed exploring new places. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her loving husband of 40 years, Shelby Gene McKinney; children, Doug McCarthy (Betty), Elkton, MD, Teresa Smith (Jerry), Rome, NY, Debbie Tuggle (Ron), North East, MD, Denise Gautsch (Bob), Elkton, MD, and Ron McKinney (Kim), Elkton, MD; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. McKinney was preceded in death by her son, Jay McCarthy; grandson, Tommy Lee Osborne, great-granddaughter, Emma; brothers, Ralph and Carl Schwalbauch; and sister, Janet McConnell.

Funeral service will be held 11AM, Thursday, January 29, 2026, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD  21921, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Elkton, MD.
