Obituary

Rev. Robert G. Reece, OSFS, professed member of the Wilmington-Philadelphia Province of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales for 66 years, died on December 6, 2021.

Born in Lansdowne, PA, on September 5, 1935, he was the son of George Reece and Jenni (Devlin) Reece. He attended St. Cyril, Ascension and St. Henry's Elementary schools, in 1954 graduated from Northeast Catholic High School, and entered the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. He professed first vows on September 7, 1955, made perpetual profession on November 27, 1958, and was ordained a priest on February 6, 1965. Father completed a BA in Philosophy (1961) and an MA in Mathematics (1965) at Catholic University of America (DC).

Following ordination, he was assigned to Father Judge High School, Philadelphia, PA where he taught Mathematics, Computers/Computer Science and served as Chair of the Mathematics Department. Father taught Computer/Computer Science at Bishop Ireton High School, Alexandria, VA where he designed and established the initial computer system at the school. After leaving secondary education, Fr. Reece served as Chaplain at the Bernardine Franciscans, Reading, PA. From 2009 to early 2020, Father lived at the Oblate community in Wyndmoor, PA, and retired to the Oblate community at Childs, MD in April 2020.

While ministering in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Father Reece served on a number of committees, including the Committee on Intergroup Education (Chair), Mathematics Curriculum Committee, Community Service Corps (founding member), and MC Squared.

Father Reece was predeceased by his twin brother, Rev. Richard T. Reece, OSFS, and is survived by his elder brother, Edward J. Reece; and his devoted cousin, Mary Doyle, together with many devoted nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions and precautions in the State of Maryland, the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in private on December 14, 2021 at the Oblate Community Chapel, Childs, MD, followed by interment at the Oblate Cemetery.
