Mary Ann Spence, age 94, of Earleville, MD, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2022. Born in Elkton, MD, on January 11, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Halus L., Sr., and Mary Hudson Reynolds.
Following graduation from high school, Mary Ann began her extensive professional career at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, MD, continuing to Haveg, Marshallton, DE, and then Hercules, Wilmington, DE. She retired as an executive secretary from Ametek, Marshallton, DE.
Mary Ann joined the Daughters of America in August 1952, and was one of the charter members, serving as treasurer until its dissolution. She was selected as State Inside Sentinel in 1956 and served as Associate State Councilor 1959-1960. Mary Ann was State Convention Chairman for quite a number of years, appointed to the National Law Committee in 1984, and served as National Convention Chairman in 1986. She was elected as National Council Treasurer in 1986 for a 12-year term. Mary Ann received honors as Past National Councilor in 1992 and was elected as Chief Judge of National Judiciary in 2000, resigning in 2002 due to poor health.
Mary Ann enjoyed traveling and arranged countless trips for the enjoyment of others. She cherished her family and friends. Though she and her husband, Bud, did not have any children of their own, they shared their love and compassion with their nieces and nephews. In addition, they showered their love with a special person in Mary Ann's life, Harry Denny, and took care of him for the duration of his final years. Mary Ann was a long-time member of Elkton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her sisters, Nancy Hopkins, Earleville, MD, and Charlene McCulley, Elkton, MD; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Hugh L. "Bud" Spence; sisters, Leone Johnston (Bill), Betty Morrow (Bill), Carrie Olewine (Bob); and brother, Halus L. Reynolds, Jr. (Pauline).
The family thanks all the many caring members of Caraway Manor Assisted Living and Amedisys Hospice for their graciousness and compassionate care provided to Mary Ann.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2022, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921, where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery, Chesapeake City, MD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Elkton United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home at the above address.
