Mark Haggerty Guns, age 63, of Elkton, MD, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2022. Born on September 16, 1959, he was the son of the late Herbert and Anna Haggerty Guns.
A lifelong resident of Cecil County, Mark attended Immaculate Conception School, Salesianum, Cecil Community College, and Mount St. Mary's College.
Mark was employed at Thiokol from 1982 to 1996 as a Chemical Tech. He then joined W. L. Gore & Associates where he worked for 26 years. Mark's interest in calibrations resulted in the Metrology Team for Gore's Tech Division. He was on the NCSL International Healthcare Metrology Committee 2011-2022 and was the CT Metrology Leader 2009-2022.
A devout Catholic, Mark was a member of Knights of Columbus Bishop Becker Council #25 and numerous church committees, including 6 years on the Parish Council.
Active in the community, Mark was a Cecil County Commissioner from 2002 to 2008. Mark represented District 5, as a member of the Cecil County Board of Commissioners, including two years as board vice president. Mark served of the: Economic Development Commission, County Board of Health, Cecil County Citizens Advisory Board, Community Adult Rehabilitation Center, Cecil County Parks and Recreation Board, Cecil County Social Services Board, Upper Shore Regional Council, Local Government Advisory Committee of the Chesapeake Bay. Maryland Association of Counties, Cecil County Fireman's Association, Cecil County Special Olympics, North East Touchdown Club, Moose Lodge No. 851, and Rogues Harbor Hunting Club. He was also a softball coach for the Elkton Little League.
While a candidate for the House of Delegates in 2006, Mark met the love of his life Donna from Queen Anne's County. They married September 26, 2009. They have shared many wonderful times together with their blended families. He was an amazing Poppy to all of his grandkids. Mark enjoyed watching sports and was a Washington Redskins, Baltimore Orioles, and Washington Capitals fan.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Smith Guns; children, Tabitha Horseman and Jessica Patton (Hunter), both of Salisbury, MD, Katelyn Abbott (Mike) of Rising Sun, MD, Billy Knotts (Melissa), Chestertown, MD and Heather Jarrell (Willie) of Centreville, MD; grandchildren, Will Jarrell, Delaney Knotts, Dalton Knotts, Holden Jarrell, Kyleigh Horseman, Gage Horseman, Carson Patton and expected granddaughter, Blakely Abbott; siblings, Ronald Guns (Linda), Nancy Ohrel, John Guns (Debbie), Sandy Whitten (Will), Lisa Guns and Frank Guns, all of Elkton, MD, Linda Roper of Lewes, DE, Angie Guns of Odenton, MD, Peter Guns (Jolene) of Rising Sun, MD and Steven Guns (Angie) of Earleville, MD.
Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 West Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am., Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Immaculate Conception Church, 455 Bow Street, Elkton, MD. Interment will follow in Galena Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Immaculate Conception Church, or Cecilton Fire Company, in care of the funeral home at the above address.
