Obituary

Louise C. Coughlan, 72, passed away at home in Elkton, MD from complications of severe diabetes and heart issues on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. She was the third of eight children born in Springfield, MA to the late John S. Coughlan, DDS and Mary Coonan Coughlan, librarian and realtor.

Louise graced us with her warm presence and bubbly personality on Sept 11, 1952. She graduated from Longmeadow HS in 1970. Next, she attended Jamestown College in Jamestown, ND and in 1975 received a BS and RN in nursing.

Her nursing career spanned 43 years. She specialized in intensive care pediatrics and adult oncology and worked in several hospitals in Los Angeles, CA and Louisville, KY. She retired from the Brown Cancer Center in Louisville. There she worked as an infusion and bone marrow transplant nurse. At every hospital she was recognized for her warmth, skills, humor and efficiency.

Despite her health issues she walked two marathons to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. While in Louisville, Louise participated in the Angel Tree Network every Christmas. She chose the names of two young boys and then provided them with complete winter outerwear. Her generosity knew no bounds.

Louise was a very talented artist creating beautiful paintings and marvelous cross stitch works which she often gifted to loved ones. Louise was also an avid reader and especially enjoyed Tom Clancy's novels. She was always an extraordinary hostess and threw fabulous parties for Christmas, Halloween and St Patrick's day. For each event she decorated trees with her many homemade ornaments.

Survivors include her 6 loving siblings, Christine H. Coughlan (Lois), East Brookfield, MA, Regina N. Thoma, East Longmeadow, MA, Maureen J. Coughlan, Elkton, MD, Pauline Riopelle, East Longmeadow, MA, John T. Coughlan (Lori), Durango, CO, and Alice A. Coughlan, Buxton, ME; 6 nieces and nephews; 9 great nieces and nephews; best friend, Kathy Michals; and her Goddaughter, Stephanie Alsarogi, both of Louisville, KY; and numerous cousins, friends and colleagues.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her youngest sister, Clare C. Coughlan (2/14/15), West Yarmouth, MA.

At Louise's request, there will be no formal services. We will miss her favorite purple and lime green bursts of color. We will love her forever. May she rest in peace.
