Leodegario A.
Najera, M.D.
August 20, 1936 – March 20, 2024
Dr. Leodegario A. Najera, M.D. of Havre de Grace, MD, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving wife and family, on March 20, 2024. He was 87 years old.
Leo was born on August 20, 1936 in Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Philomena O'Grady Najera, three sons and their wives – Philip (Nicole), Louis (Kristina), Leo (Kristen), and nine grandchildren. His family was his joy.
Leo graduated from the University of The East College of Medicine in Quezon City, Philippines and immigrated to the United States in 1963 to complete his residency in general and colorectal surgery in Brooklyn, NY and Buffalo, NY. Leo moved to Maryland and joined his brother, Dr. Rolando Najera at Union Hospital (now ChristianaCare) in Cecil County, MD, from 1971-2002, the last 18 years as Chief of Surgery. He served the community he loved and is remembered by patients for his SMILE and compassion. His humility, faith, and most importantly the Hippocratic Oath guided his moral principles. In retirement, he continued God's work bringing surgical services to remote villages in the Philippines through his missionary work.
Leo lived in Elkton and Chesapeake City before moving back to Havre de Grace after retirement. He enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening, golfing, and sports on TV (especially boxing). Leo also loved to travel, especially to Ireland, the homeland of his wife, Philomena. And if you knew Doc, he loved a good party! Next time you gather with family and friends, raise a pint of Guinness in his honor and toast to a great man. "Slainte!"
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Church, 454 Bow Street, Elkton, MD, immediately following Visitation (9:15-10:45am). Interment will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Childs, MD, on Monday, April 8, 2024 at 11am (all are welcome).
