Julia “Julie” Agnes Schmitt, 91, of Elkton MD, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. Born in Baltimore, MD on January 11, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Nannie Johnson Hassell.
Julie was a devoted homemaker and a lifelong volunteer with Immaculate Conception Outreach and the Beehive Thrift Shop with Newton Hospital, Newton, NJ. She found great joy in helping others and most of all, cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. Julie will be remembered for her caring heart, generosity, and love for those around her.
Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years; Wendel J. Schmitt, children; Laura Schmitt, Newark, DE, Nancy Mackey, Stillwater, NJ, and David Schmitt, Swiftwater, PA, grandchildren; David, Sarah and Beth, brother; William Hassell (Linda), Pasadena, MD, and nephew; Donald Hassell (Kathy), League City, TX.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers; Donald Hassell and Leroy Hassell Jr., and sisters-in-law; Violet Hassell and Beulah Hassell.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM, Monday, October 5, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Church, 454 Bow Street, Elkton, MD 21921, with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM in the Church Chapel. Interment will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Elkton, MD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Outreach or Immaculate Conception Church, at the above listed address.
