Obituary

Joseph Brendan Smith, age 90, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away after a short illness, Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Born in Brighton, MA on February 11, 1935, he was the son of the late Frank M. and Catherine Carnes Smith.

A veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Smith dedicated many years of service as a counselor for the State of Maryland before retiring. He was also a successful entrepreneur, having previously owned a carpet business. His passion for animals led him to become an owner and trainer of thoroughbred horses, a pursuit that combined discipline, patience, and deep respect for the sport.

In his younger years, Mr. Smith ran many marathons, golfed, traveled, and enjoyed white water rafting. He loved spending time with his family, woodworking, building bird houses, cheering for Philadelphia sports teams, and helping his Rising Sun community. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Charlotte Noon Smith and their beloved and blended family; children, Ruthann Smith, Bree Rodrigues (Havell), Tara Esperanza (Raciel), Neal Maillet (Jackie), Corey Folsom, Derick Noon (Katherine); grandchildren, Derick Noon, and Andrew Noon; great-grandchildren, AJ, Caleb, Keadon, Edwin, Brendon, and Catherine; sister, Marcella Littlefield; and numerous extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his siblings, Francis, Mary, Catherine, Clare, James C.F.X., Edward, Ruth, Paul, Ellen,, Rosemary, Louise, James, Rosamund R.S.M., Dorothy, and Marjorie and his step-daughter, Theresa A. Kilby.

Prayer service with military honors will be held 2 PM, Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD  21921, with visitation beginning at 1 PM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a local Catholic Charity of your choice or to Endeavor Church, 32 Hilltop Road, Elkton, MD  21921.
