Obituary

John Maslar, lovingly known as "Brother," passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, at Delaware Hospice in Milford, Delaware. Born on July 1,1930 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, John's early years were spent with his grandparents, Yugoslavian immigrants, who instilled in him a strong moral foundation. His beloved "Babo" became a guiding compass throughout his life and John often cherished summers spent at her home, where he enjoyed delivering fresh pies for Mrs. Smith—a memory he held close to his heart.

At the age of five, John moved to Reading, Pennsylvania, to live with his parents, John and Mary (Benjazek) Maslar, and his siblings. A devoted son and brother, John left high school twice to work and help support his family, demonstrating the selflessness that would define his life. He ultimately graduated in 1950, and it was during his school years that he met his future wife, Dolores Karczewski. They married in 1951 in Wilmington, Delaware, while John was serving in the Air Force and National Guard.

The newlyweds settled in Dover, Delaware, where they built a loving home and raised six children in ten years. Their family life was deeply rooted in faith  evidenced by their association with Holy Cross Catholic Church which was a cornerstone for all of them.

John's career as a salesman with O.M. Scott & Sons and later with the Purcell Organization was marked by success and numerous awards for his achievements; however, his true vocation was service to others. Whether helping a stranger, supporting his parish community,
or being a steady presence for extended family, John was a role model of generosity and kindness. His grandchildren remember him fondly for his wisdom, humor, and love, as he often said, "Smile, you're on God's camera!" and "Don't worry, be happy!"

John loved life's simple joys: playing cards, fishing trips to Canada, traveling with his wife Dolores and their family, and watching his favorite teams—the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Phillies, and the Eagles. Above all, he delighted in attending his grandchildren's
activities, no matter where they were. (Kristi, Michael, Matt, Jon, Christina, Kara, Joey, Katie, and Jay)

In his later years, John lived in Glassboro, New Jersey, and Millsboro, Delaware, before returning to Dover, where he spent his final years surrounded by friends at Westminster Village.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dolores; his parents; and his older brother, Rev. Bill Maslar. He is survived by his six children: Mary of Newark, Paul (Deb) of Dover, Terri Deakins (John) of Bear, Marge Litka (Dave) of Bear, Trish (Dave Perry) of Lewes, and Kathy (Ed Dougherty) of Dover. He also leaves behind three siblings: Rita Nekoranik of Morrisville, PA, Bob Maslar and Loretta of Laurel, MD, and Philip Maslar and Dawn of Oklahoma City, OK.

John's legacy includes his 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as dear friends Earl Horner and Joan Graves.
Special thanks are extended to Nurse Pam and dedicated staff and residents of Westminster Assisted Living, whose care and companionship enriched John's final years.
