Obituary

John Charles "Jack" Sentman, P.D., age 71, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at his beloved Barley Mill Farm in Cecilton, Maryland.
Born in Elkton, Maryland to Elizabeth Ann DiPaola Sentman and the late Donald Neal Sentman, Sr. on April 25, 1952, Jack was a member of the first kindergarten class at the new Immaculate Conception School on Bow Street in Elkton. Thereafter, he graduated with the Class of 1970 from Salesianum School in Wilmington, Delaware, and went on to earn bachelor's degrees in chemistry and zoology from University of Maryland College Park in 1974, and his Doctor of Pharmacy (P.D.) degree from University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 1977. During his career as a pharmacist, he worked at University of Maryland Hospital Pharmacy, Harford Pharmacy, and North East Pharmacy. He then assumed his role in running his family's Elkton-based beer wholesaler business, Sentman Distributors, Inc., for which he served as acting President from 1992 until his passing. Throughout his long career as a "beer man," he still maintained his pharmacy license, serving as a weekend relief pharmacist in Elkton at both City Pharmacy and Lyon's Pharmacy, where he enjoyed the company of his friend and mentor, Tony Sniadowski, many black coffees, and Tony's famous chicken salad sandwiches.

Jack is remembered for his good humor, gentle spirit, and dedication to the Elkton community. Throughout his life, he served on the Parish Council for Immaculate Conception Church, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, was active on various boards, including the American Cancer Society and Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, and volunteered as a quiet and charitable benefactor to countless local organizations. In 2013, he was honored by the Elkton Alliance and Chamber of Commerce as the Elkton Small Business Person of the Year, and later in 2016, accepted recognition from the Maryland Comptroller's Office for maintaining the beer business, which has been family owned and operated since when prohibition ended in 1933. Perhaps his most cherished role later in his life, though, was that of "Pop," to his grandchildren, Peter Francis and Nora Bea, who loved him and will miss him terribly.

In addition to his mother, Elizabeth, and sister, Ann, Jack is survived by his loving wife, best friend, and most-favorite-person-in-the-world, of more than 40 years, Gail Monroe Sentman, their children: Margaret Sentman Crouse (Larry), Robert E. Sentman, Esq., and Maureen E. Sentman, Esq., his grandchildren Peter and Eleanor Danos, their father, Tim Danos, mother-in-law, Beatrice Monroe, sisters-in-law, Cindy Gillespie (Albert), Lori Monroe (Lou), and Kim Sentman, and brother-in-law Tim Monroe (Mary).

Jack was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ann Marie Sentman in 1996, father, Donald N. Sentman, Sr., brother, Donald N. Sentman, Jr., father-in-law Lloyd H. Monroe, and a loyal 17-year-old yellow lab companion, Otis. He leaves behind numerous other nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones, many with whom he shared the love of his farms, Barley Mill, Beechwood, and Fairgale, a relaxed perspective on goose, duck, and deer hunting, John Deere gator rides, and a particular love for watching bright orange sunsets from his and Gail's newly built and prized "Barn-dominium," thanks to one of his best friends, builder Matt Chapman.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 3 PM, Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Immaculate Conception Church, 454 Bow Street, Elkton, MD 21921.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mount Aviat Academy, in care of Hicks Home for Funerals, P.A. at 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921.
