Jeffrey A. "Smitty" Smith, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home on October 9, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.  Jeff was born in 1954, the eldest son of Allen Smith and the late Shirley Ritchie Smith.

Jeff was a graduate of Newark High School.  His working career began when he turned his passion for trains into employment with P and R Railcar, followed by Trailer Trane, and finishing with Delpro.  He then worked for Thiokol Corporation.  His working days ended after 20 years with the City of Newark, his cherished hometown.

Jeff proudly served his community as a lifetime member and past fire Chief of Aetna Hose Hook & Ladder Company.  An avid sports fan, he enjoyed pitching for Aetna's softball teams, cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and Delaware's Fightin' Blue Hens.  His many pastimes included fishing at Sunset Lake, trips to the beach, and any and all things about trains.  He was a member of Newark United Methodist Church, Newark Anglers Association, and Newark Historical Society.  Family and friends were everything to Jeff and he set the example as a loyal friend and a devoted son, husband, and father.  Above all else, his proudest and most fulfilling role was as dad to his four children.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Lisa Sugzdinis Smith; children, AJ, Jack, Mackenzie, and Madison; brother, Gary Smith (David); sister, Nancy Smith (Paula); and his beloved nieces.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at Aetna Hose Hook & Ladder Company's Fire Hall, 410 Ogletown Road, Newark, DE 19711, where family and friends may start visiting at 10:00 a.m.  Interment in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be private.
