Helen Mary
Long
August 16, 1929 – June 8, 2025
Helen Mary Long, 95, of Elkton, MD, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 8, 2025. Born in Elkton on August 16, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Walter Harold (Gus) and Mary Aimee Henderson.
Helen graduated from Elkton High School in 1946 and attended Goldey Beacom where she honed her secretarial skills. She worked at Union Hospital prior to joining the secretarial staff at the University of Delaware in 1961. In 1990 she opted to take the early retirement package but that only lasted a year, and she was back in the Physics Department working part time, which she continued to do until COVID closed the office. She fully retired at age 91.
The Physics Department at the University of Delaware was her extended family and there was no place else she would rather be. She traveled to Greece multiple times to be conference secretary for Dr. Hadjipanayis. For many years she hosted international students in her home, and they also became family which lead her to travel to Japan for a wedding. Students and staff have continued to stay in contact with her. Her other love was shopping. She would be the first one in the car ready to shop till she dropped. Considered "one of the girls" she was always up for any adventure that her daughter and friends planned. She was a lifelong member of Cherry Hill Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. What a wonderful long life she enjoyed!
Survivors include her daughter, Paula H. Newton, Elkton, MD; brother, Charles Lawrence Henderson, Elkton, MD; and numerous nieces & nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Long Jr.; brothers, John A. Henderson and Walter Harold Henderson; and son-in-law, Ralph H. Newton.
Funeral service will be held 11 AM, Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. Interment will be in Sharps Cemetery, Fair Hill, MD.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Abbey Manor and Amedisys Hospice for the compassionate and dedicated care they provided to Helen in her final days.
