Mr. Gary Lawrence Kern, age 45, of Elkton, MD, passed away suddenly on December 8, 2021, at Union Hospital in Elkton.

Born on June 2, 1976, in Baltimore, MD, Gary was a graduate of Overlea High School in Baltimore, where he starred on the varsity lacrosse team. He would go on to earn his associate's degree in business from Harford Community College. For the past seven years, he had been employed as an automation controls engineer with W. L. Gore.

A devout Christian, Gary was an active member and elder of Riverside Church in Aberdeen, MD. He was instrumental in many church programs including the media ministry, but his greatest joy was in bringing the love of God to young people in the youth ministry.

In his leisure hours, he enjoyed playing golf with friends and working on cars.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 16 ½ years, Sarah Elizabeth (Poane) Kern; father, Gary Hedges Kern of Columbia, MD; mother, Norma (Wynn) Tilton and her husband Neil of Aberdeen; sister, Lori (Kern) Frebert and her husband Dave of Port Deposit, MD; grandmother, Edith Faye Wynn of Port Deposit; father- and mother-in-law, Robert T. Poane and Nancy (Whitman) Poane of Abingdon, MD; brothers-in-law, Kyle Poane and Austin Poane and his wife Meghan; niece, Parker Poane; and grandparents-in-law, Eugene and Doris Paino. He was preceded in death by a sister, Charisa Kern Shackleford.

A celebration of Gary's life will be held at 6 pm on Wednesday, December 15th, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 West Stockton Street, Elkton , where visitation will begin at 4 pm.
