Frederick Henry
Herman
December 14, 1931 – January 17, 2026
Frederick Henry Herman, Elkton, MD, (formerly of Wilmington, DE), passed away peacefully in his home, Saturday, January 17, 2026. He was the son of the late Edward Walter and Francis Karcewski Herman.
Mr. Herman graduated from Salesianum School in 1949. Shortly after high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served as a reconnaissance scout in Cuba. Proud of his three years of service, he rarely went out without his Marine baseball cap, especially on trips to Lewes, DE, and Lancaster, PA—two destinations close to his heart.
After his honorable discharge he returned to Wilmington where he began his career in the banking industry at Wilmington Trust. He met his wife, Betty Pressley, at Wilmington Trust and they married in 1955 at St Helena's Catholic Church in Wilmington. Soon after, they moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he continued his banking career. Eventually they moved to Coral Gables, Florida.
Fred had a fondness for collecting art and this passion led him to leave the banking industry and open an antique business in Coral Gables. In time, he returned to Wilmington, and continued his enthusiasm as an antique dealer by opening a shop there. His fondness for the all of the arts lead him to playing guitar and he was in a band in his younger years. In retirement, he volunteered as an usher at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington. He continued to collect art well into his nineties and was eager to show friends his collection when they came to visit.
Freddy, as he was lovingly called by family and friends, spent Sunday and holiday dinners with his family which he enjoyed. There was always a huge bag of candy and other treats for his younger great nephews when he walked through the door. He frequented Rehobeth Beach and loved spending the winter months in Marco Island, FL, A loving son, he cared for his mother until her death and was again the sole care giver of his companion, Madeleine Baierlein, until her passing. A member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Wilmington, his Catholic faith was very important to him; he read daily from his prayer book and a bible given to him by his mother in 1958.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Pressley Herman, of Georgia, his brother and sister-in-law Eugene F. Herman and Nancy Steele Herman of Elkton and his companion of 21 years, Madeleine Baierlein, of Wilmington, DE.
Survivors include nieces, Kimberly Sentman, Ocean City, MD, and Kandace Schreuder (Mark), Elkton, MD; great nephews, Dutch Sentman, Chesapeake City, MD, Roman and Maksim Schreuder, both of Elkton, and long-time friend, Barbara Dotts of Wilmington.
