Francis X.
Hughes Sr.
March 3, 1927 – June 4, 2025
Francis X. Hughes Sr., known affectionately by many as Franny and later in life as Frank, 98, and a longtime resident of Elkton, MD, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. Born in Philadelphia, PA on March 3, 1927, he was the son of the late Joseph Hughes and Elizabeth O'Neil Hughes Short.
Franny attended West Catholic High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Serving as a Private First Class aboard the U.S.S. Plunkett, a veteran of World War II, he honorably served his country with distinction and received an Honorable Discharge in 1947. Following his military service, Franny returned home and in 1949, married his former wife, Catherine Iorio. Together, they raised four children. He went on to build a 35-year career as a chemical operator with Rohm & Haas, from which he later retired.
Franny was a proud member of the Tin Can Sailors, attending shipmate reunions for many years. Beyond his career and military involvement, he was known for his vibrant spirit and many passions. He was an accomplished pool player, winning numerous trophies in league play at his local pub. Even in recent years, he delighted in playing with his kids and grandkids during holiday gatherings, never losing his sharp aim or sense of fun.
In April 1996, Franny married his best friend, Betty Towlinski, with whom he shared many joyful years until her passing in November 2013. He had a soft spot for animals, especially the two Shar-Peis he rescued and lovingly cared for. He was a devoted dog dad to the very end. Franny will be profoundly missed by his family, who cherished him deeply, as well as by the many friends, neighbors, and fellow veterans.
Survivors include his children, Michael Hughes (Peggy), Kathleen Kratchman (Sheldon), Diane Satterthwaite (Dave), and Francis Hughes Jr. (Lisa), all of Pennsylvania; 5 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Iorio Hughes; second wife, Betty Towlinski Hughes; and all of his siblings.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM, Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Immaculate Conception Church, 454 Bow Street, Elkton, MD 21921, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. Interment will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Cherry Hill, MD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Operation Scarlet at P.O. Box 8463, Lancaster, PA 17604.
