Ella Jane
Sommers
May 2, 1934 – March 19, 2023
Ella Jane Sommers, age 88 years, of Elkton, Maryland, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, March 19, 2023.
Mrs. Sommers was born on May 2, 1934 in Union Hospital in Elkton, Maryland, and was the daughter and youngest child of Franklin Taylor Williams, Sr. and Ella Simmer Williams. She was a graduate of Elkton High School where she met the love of her life, her husband, Richard Devon Sommers, Sr. After high school she earned her Secretarial Degree from Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware. Following her graduation, she worked for the Department of Agriculture at the University of Delaware, and in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1953, Jane and Richard were married and were together 67 years. They made their home in Elkmore on their beloved Elk River where they raised two children, Sherri Lee Sommers Leverance (Ken) and Richard Devon Sommers, Jr. (Dawn). They also had two granddaughters to cherish, Kayla Sommers and Deanna Sommers Enslen, (Parker.)
Besides taking care of her family, Jane was an ardent lover of music and the arts. She enjoyed going to the theatre in New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Wilmington and at the Milburn Stone Theatre at Cecil College. She played both the piano and the organ, beautifully, and she served as the organist for the Elkton Presbyterian Church for 25 years. She was a long-time member of the church's choir, directed the Echo Choir, led the Youth Group, and was a Sunday School Teacher for many years. She gave piano lessons to family and church members, friends, and other youth in the community. Mrs. Sommers was honored as the Presbyterian Women of the Year, and as a 50-year member of her church where she served multiple terms as an Elder, Trustee and Deacon. She also attended her childhood church, St. John's United Methodist Church in Lewisville, Pennsylvania with her brother David.
Mrs. Sommers loved being at the heart of her family, especially her grandchildren. She invited everyone to her annual Fourth of July picnic at her home on the Elk, where the family enjoyed swimming, boating, and water sports accompanied by her delicious picnic supper which featured her famous chocolate cake. She and her family loved to travel, and made annual trips to St. Martin, along with numerous other trips. More recently, she traveled to Fort Myers, Florida with her family. She particularly loved taking rides to the other farm with her brother, David where they grew up.
Mrs. Sommers was an exemplary daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Importantly, she was a woman of strong faith who cared deeply for others. She has been a model of faith, strength and love for all who knew her. She will be dearly missed by her son, Rick, daughter-in-law, Dawn, and her grandchildren, Kayla, Deanna, and Parker. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her daughter, Sherri and son-in-law, Ken; her parents, Taylor and Ella Williams; her sisters, Sarah and Anna Williams; her brothers, John, Franklin, Billy, Roger, Richard and David Williams; and close nephew, John (Jack) Williams of Norristown, Pennsylvania.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on, Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the Elkton Presbyterian Church, 209 East Main Street, in Elkton.
