Della Joyce
Simpson
October 11, 1948 – May 4, 2024
Della Joyce Simpson, 75 of Elkton, MD passed away on May 4, 2024, with family by her side. Born on October 11, 1948, in Chilhowie, VA, she was the daughter of the late Lee Roy Sr. and Kathern Ennis Trivett Combs.
Della had spent most of her life as a resident of Cecil County, graduating from Elkton High School. After high school, she was a stay-at-home devoted mom that was blessed with 3 sons and a daughter. Later in life, she retired from Union Hospital where she had performed housekeeping duties for many years. Family was everything to her and every day spent with them was cherished. Her legacy, in addition to her children, would be the multiple grandchildren that followed over the years. As her family grew larger, gathering Christmas mornings for breakfast at her home were treasured, not to mention the best biscuits & gravy! Della loved the family traditions of getting together on holidays and spending Sunday afternoons with her mom and siblings for dinner, instilling the importance of family through those moments that were passed down to her children and grandchildren. One of her favorite pastimes, when she wasn't nurturing multiple house plants, was yard sale hopping with her daughter on Saturdays, followed by lunch. She enjoyed game nights with her family, and bowling in a league in her youthful days in-between taking care of her children. Her sewing talent was shared with the Go Sew Sisters Quilting Ministry, where she helped many and built strong relationships with her sewing sisters. She loved Jesus and had been a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Della was somewhat quiet, reserved, and easy going, while also living a simple life. She would always find something to smile and/or laugh about in every situation and had the courage and strength to adapt and overcome multiple life challenges, such as raising 4 children while working multiple jobs and providing a home for her family. Della will be remembered and missed by all, however, we do have comfort in knowing she is with Jesus.
Survivors include her children, Duane Simpson (Kim), Royal Oak, MD, Mark Simpson (Angie), and Paul Simpson (Belinda), both of North East, MD; grandchildren, Samantha, Amber, Devin, Logan, Mark, Courtney, Sondra, Paul, Anthony and Tiffany; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Cayden, Audrey, Chase, Wyatt, Sawyer, Maeve, Sadie, Everleigh, Charli, Annie, Cali, Ava, Stephen, and Ariana; siblings, Norma Benjamin (Wayne), Mary Ganzman, Danny Combs (Rhonda), and Lee Roy Combs, Jr. (Laura); numerous nieces and nephews; and son-in- law, James Bowman, Jr.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Diane Bowman; and grandsons, William, and James III.
Funeral service will be held 2 PM, Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921, with visitation beginning at 1 PM. Interment will be in Gilpin Manor Memorial Park, Elkton, MD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Go Sew Sisters Quilting Ministry at 25 Jones Chapel Road, Elkton, MD 21921.
