Aloysius Joseph "Joe" McDonough, Jr., 93, of Middletown, DE, formerly of Chesapeake City, MD, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025. Born in Drexel Hill, PA on May 19, 1932, he was the son of the late Aloysius Joseph McDonough and Anna Falls McDonough.
Joe retired from the United States Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (E8) in 1972 with 22 years of dedicated service. He enlisted during the Korean War; participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis; had several Mediterranean tours; and retired during the Vietnam Era Conflict. Joe served aboard the USS Yellowstone (AD-27); USS Hawkins (DD-873); USS Sigourney (DD-643); USS McNair (DD-679); shore duty in Dam Neck, VA; returning to sea aboard the USS Dahlgren (DLG-12); USS Wm. H. Standley (DLG-32); shore duty in Newport, RI and completed his service aboard the USS Newport News (CA-148). Joe also retired as a Rural Letter Carrier with the Elkton Post Office. Throughout his life, Joe, held a variety of jobs including delivering ice and papers; milk truck driver, gas station attendant; undertaker assistant, school bus driver and patrolman.
Joe was a former Chesapeake City town council member; past Grand Knight, Old Bohemia Knights of Columbus; life member of Singerly Fire Company and Chesapeake City Fire Company; member of Chesapeake City VFW Post 7687 and Elkton American Legion Cecil Post 15. Joe enjoyed reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Most of all, Joe, enjoyed spending time with his beloved family and friends.
Survivors include his daughters, Leah Parson of Elkton, MD; Kathryn Hutton (Albie) of Milford, DE; and Margaret McClay (Kit) of Earleville, MD. Also survived by his grandchildren, Guinnevere McDonough; MariClare Pochvatilla (Jack); Patrick Hutton (Sarah); Marlene Rafferty (Ryan); Bridget Hayman (James); Stephen McClay (Heather) and Katelyn Simpson (Sam); 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Also survived by his sister-in-law Marlene McMahon of Berlin, MD and his 5 nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Audrey Way Johnson McDonough; his son, Patrick McDonough; grandson, Anthony Klimasewski; son-in-law, Bill Parson; and brother-in-law, William McMahon.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM; Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Immaculate Conception Church, 454 Bow Street, Elkton, MD, with visitation in the church chapel from 10 AM to 11 AM. Interment with Military Honors of Joe and Audrey's cremains to follow mass at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Elkton, MD
